I’d been aware of some of the content that Luca “The Space Koala” has recently created but hadn’t paid too much attention–that is, until I stumbled on a great video she made discussing both the art and science of creating great astrophotographs. Needless to say, after watching this video I’ll be following her more closely.
This content in this video was previously presented at the Northeast Astro Imaging Conference (NEAIC) in the spring of 2026 as the keynote presentation. Without diving into excruciating detail, Luca describes the four pillars of a strong astrophotograph: Signal, the Truth, Balance, and Composition. Unlike the many astrophotography videos that delve into the details of image capture and processing, Luca discusses more of a philosophical approach to creating compelling astrophotographs.
I consider myself to be at least an experienced astrophotographer after over five years of shooting, but I found Luca’s presentation to be an excellent reminder of what it takes to produce great images. I encourage astrophotographers of any level of experience to watch and learn.
